Proper locker room etiquette

A plea to the 40-some year old woman at the Y: Would you please refrain from parading around the women's locker room naked? We all know women's locker rooms are a safe space for showering, dressing, changing, what have you. It is not a space of judgment or insecurity, but a female haven where we can feel good about ourselves for our effort to better our own bodies. We might even feel the same bond that men do - you know how they smack each other's butts with towels. Heck, I'm good with throwing out the occasional "you go, girl!" as well.

But for the sake of my own insecurity and uncomfortablness in experiencing this woman's pride in her appearance, and for allowing others to enjoy the safe space of the locker room - I have to ask, what is proper locker room etiquette these days?

At least the exhibitionist isn't Rosie O'Donnell. Or Helen Thomas. Or Janet Reno.

Too true.

What does "you go, girl!" mean?

You go girl! is all about empowering women, whenever they are acting with authority, confidence, strength, working to improve themselves, and so forth. More women should say it to eachother, and I'd say, adopt it as their mantra.

would you say it is appropriate for a certain father of the boyfriend to say "you go, girl"...

I think it depends on the circumstance...

I don't have any problem with other women walking around nude in the women's locker room. I don't do it myself, but I wish I had their self-confidence.

IMO it's actually a good thing when women freely walk around nude in the locker room because it helps all of us to see what average female bodies look like as opposed to the actresses and models that we usually see nude in movies and magazines. There's no reason for any woman to feel ashamed about being nude in front of other women in the locker room, and I wish we all the confidence to be able to do things like shower and change in front of each other without shame and embarrassment!

GLORIA,

I couldn't have said it any better.

I'm a straight female, but I say the more skin the better in the women's locker room. It's a locker room, there's supposed to be nude women in there. Confidence is a good thing.
